Preparing a new Cricket Bat

Before you take your new bat to the nets or the middle, it’s important to prepare it properly. At OX29 Bat Doctor, we recommend two effective methods for getting your bat match-ready, depending on how soon you want to use it and how traditionally you like to prepare your bats.

Option 1: Apply an Anti-Scuff Sheet, Then Begin Knocking In

This is our recommended method for most players.

Anti-scuff sheets serve the same purpose as oil — they help retain moisture in the blade and protect the surface from early damage. By covering the bat face with a sheet, you remove the need to oil that area, allowing you to begin the knocking-in process right away.

Because the surface remains firmer (not softened by oil), the bat tends to need less time before it's safe to use.

  • Faster preparation time
  • Less prone to seam marks and surface dents
  • No need to wait for oil to dry
  • Ideal if you want to use your bat shortly after purchase

Option 2: Traditional Oiling with Raw Linseed Oil, Then Knock In

For a more traditional approach, you can oil the bat using raw linseed oil, then begin the knocking-in process.

Oiling helps maintain the bat’s optimal moisture content, which is essential for long-term durability. Think of the oil as a moisture barrier — helping prevent the wood from drying out over time. However, oiling softens the face slightly, so the bat will require longer and more careful knocking-in before it’s match-ready.

  • Helps maintain long-term moisture balance
  • Traditional method preferred by some players
  • Especially useful if you're not applying an anti-scuff sheet

Note: This method requires a longer preparation time, and you’ll need to build up mallet pressure more gradually to avoid damaging the softened blade.

Our Recommendation

We recommend Option 1. Applying an anti-scuff sheet gives you the protective benefits of oil without the waiting time. It also guards the blade against seam marks, dents, and surface cracks, making it the ideal method for most players — especially if you're eager to get your new bat into action.
