Bat makers rehandling other brands of bat
Share
Rehandling a bat isn’t always as simple as it sounds – mainly because almost every brand has its own splice style. The splice where the handle meets the blade can differ by thickness, depth, even how far into the blade it’s cut. Some brands leave less willow at the shoulder; others make the splice deep, creating a longer dead spot. And since the ball never really pings around the splice region, you don’t want that area sitting too low on your bat!
In our workshop, we’ve built our own machines for splicing – both in the bat and in the handle. Over time, we’ve dialled in exactly the depth and thickness we like. It’s not totally unique – but it’s different from many other brands, especially some Pakistan-made bats, which often cut noticeably thicker splices.
Our machines are calibrated so the splice in the blade and the V in the handle fit almost perfectly. That means minimal extra work to get a flawless joint. Admittedly, it took trial and error (and a few wasted handles) to get things dialled in.
Because everything is so precisely set now, we don’t tweak the machines for every rehandle – that would waste time and materials. So sometimes, a bit of the old handle material remains in the splice. Some people insist you must remove every scrappy bit, but we’ve found that unnecessary. As long as we clean out any loose strips or dry glue and re-glue properly, the new handle bonds just fine – like it’s mating with fresh willow.
Whenever possible, we cut to the full depth of the original splice – unless it’s too deep or our handle length doesn’t allow for that. We’ve never had problems leaving a small remnant of old splice behind, and it actually helps us work faster – especially in peak seasons or during stock runs.
If we had to keep adjusting our setup every time, everything would slow down – frustration would creep in, and output would suffer. Keeping things consistent helps us deliver dependable, high-quality work every time.
